FYI: Homework Assignment #3 Lonesome Road Blues

Lonesome Road Blues

I walked on down that lonesome line
Hung my head and I cried
I wept and I cried under a willow tree
Out by the deep blue sea
My mama, my dear papa can be found,
And my brother on a county road
Now I been down that long plank walk,
I’m on my way back home

You cause me to weep, you do cause me to moan
You cause me to leave my home
I cried last night and the night before
I swear I won’t cry anymore

Your fast mail train comin round that track
Killed my brown eyed boy
They took him down that smokey track
Brought him back on a cooling board
Now I’m lookin down that lonesome line
Just as far as I care to see
I have no money lost my brown eyed boy
These blues won’t set me free

You do cause me to weep, you do cause me to moan
You cause me to leave my home
I cried last night and the night before
I swear I won’t cry anymore

1/ Read the lyrics song sung by Adreienne Young-Describe what you see has, and is, happening

2/ Describe her feelings toward each of the persons in the song

3/ Who is the "you" in the song?

4/ Describe the nature of the love/pain expressed for the persons in the song;

5/ How does the music add or detract to the story told.

ps: The cooling board is a wooden plank used for laying out a corpse so it could be prepared for burial.

Due next Wednesday! Sure, take a look at what others might have said, but I want your thoughts only.

  1. To me Adreienne seems to be singing about the pains of love in the general sense. She goes on to sing about walking down a lonesome line crying and in pain, but the one thing that isn't the clearest is who the "you" is. It could be her lover that caused the tears and pain or the loss of her, brown eyed boy,but one thing that is for certain is that the singer is on their own waiting for someone to come back to her. Waiting, looking, and hoping for sign that her brown eyed boy would join her side again. The music itself carries a saddening blues vibe but when the lyrics are mixed into the song the story being told not only makes sense but causes the listener to actually feel a fragment of the pain and suffering she must have been going through to write this song. Most of this song is revolving around the suffering of loosing a loved one and how lonely life can be after going through such trauma. Even though she goes on to sing about the pains, actually letting the emotions out instead of holding them in, there is no escape for her. She is devoured by the agony of love.

  2. What I see is that Adreienne is talking about a break up with her significant other or lover. She talks about it as if she has experience with this kind of event before since she says "i walked on down that lonesome line". She feels lonely since this "you" person has left her. She knows that her mom, dad, and brother can be found so she knows they'll always be there for her. This "you" person has brought her a lot of pain and loneliness. I believe the "you" person is her significant other or lover that has left her and caused her to feel this way. I believe the pain that she shows to her lover also shows how much she loved this person. I believe the music adds to the story told since the music has a light sad tone to it which i feel fits this story.

  3. In this song Adreienne lets out her emotions about what I assume to be a recent break up with a lover who changed at some point in the relationship. To me it seemed like she had left everything behind to be with this person and they broke her heart and now shes looking at her future and seeing a lonely road where she must go back home and addmit to her family they were right about this person and she should of never left home for them. I think the "you" in the song refers to her lovers new personality and traits that made her "brown eyed boy" disappear. I believe she had a lover who changed their personality while in the relationship with her that made her leave. The music helps express the feelings of the story of feeling lonely and conveys the pain in her voice.

  4. While reading the lyrics of the song, I could see a breakup and destruction of lives. The singer was going through a break up with someone. To me, it seems like the person somehow died. She truly loves everyone in the song. Obviously she loves her mother, father, and brother; the love for the other person is different though. This love means so much more to her. The you in this song is her significant other. In this song, love is a strong force that bonds someone to someone else. She loves her significant other, but seems to lose him causing immense pain. This pain causes sorrow a lot in her life, but she promises to get past it. The music accompanies the story by giving highs and lows to important parts of the story.

  5. After reading the lyrics of Lonesome Road Blues I can see that this song is about a girl who has lost a guy that she loves. It according to the lyrics this brown eyed boy has "died" but I think that it may be word play for the fact that he is no longer the same person he used to be. In the song she says her parents can be found, so I think that this means that she doesn't have that great of a relationship with them. She can find them but they have been gone. She says her brother can be found on a country road which to me means that he's not close with her. As Adreienne refers to "you" throughout the song she is talking about her lover that she no longer has. The nature of the song is very depressing and sad. There is a bitter tone to it because of her loss. She clearly loves him and he is indifferent. The sad sounding music only adds to the story being told through the lyrics.

  6. After reading the lyrics and listening to the song, I feel she is singing about losing someone very close to her, someone she loved and adored for and wasn't expecting to lose so soon. She knows where to find her parents and brother along with finding her way back home, but is not necessarily wanting to come back to any of them. The word "you" I think is representing the "brown eyed boy" who I believe could have been a boyfriend that led her to leave her home and family, but along the way changed and ultimately broke her heart. Adreienne in the song is expressing how she is seeing her future now alone and with a broken heart. The music gives the lyrics a sad and depressing feeling, but also a sense that she really loved this "brown eyed boy" and even though he is gone she would do anything to have him back.

  7. As far as i can tell she is talking about loss particularly family and a close male figure, whether it be a child or a lover is hard to say.Outside of the "you" there is longing for all people mentioned. I believe that the "you" refers to death or sorrow. Just seems to be the most fitting. While talking about mama and papa it seems to be a blunt pain not as recent or dramatic but still very painful. Where as the loss of her "boy" it is a very devastating loss.

  8. I read the lyrics before the song and both times I see her talking about the death of a man she loved, but "you" in this song doesn't particularly mean her "brown eyed boy" to me, but instead grief. Grief is causing her to have these emotional feelings about her lost lover, and her saying "I swear I won't cry anymore" states she's actively trying to move on from the grief. The tone of the music doesn't play much of a role in the beginning because it doesn't seem to fit with death, but after she starts to move on, the tone makes sense. In death, usually songs about it posses a darker tone, but since shes trying to move on from it, a brighter tone is in place to keep her from going to the darkness.

  9. Adreienne Young is singing about the loss of a son and how she is trying to cope with the loss or at least gain some closure to no avail. She mentions that her mother, father, and brother are living comfortably by noting they live on a county road; possibly indicating that they have moved on and she alone continues to suffer from the loss. The “You” could refer to God. Possibly she blames God for the accident that took the life of her son and how much pain that God has caused her as a result. She longs for the company of someone she can never see again. The knowledge that nothing will ever be the same again is a heavier weight than the physical absence of the boy she loves. This melancholy blues style is indicative of the early 20th century when it was written. Music helps to set the mood for the lyrics and the style presented assists in furthering the portrayal of the mother’s state of emotion.

  10. Adreienne Young is sad and crying because because of the recent death in her life. She tries to not show it by going out on her own and letting her emotions out. She talks about her mom and dad as if they are either dead or not around to comfort her, while her brother is out living his life. "You" refers to possibly the army saying that they took Young's love and are the reason for his death. The emotions are heart felt and are to the point where Young is trying to let go of the death. The style of music kind of sets the time period and also helps with the pain that she feels.

  11. To me I think Adreienne Young is describing a heart breaking moment about how she lost her lover, I'm not sure if he died or not but he left her and caused her to have a broken heart. She was in so much pain that she promised herself that she'll stop crying. She cared about the person deeply in the song but will try to get over him.

  12. 1) Adreienne Young is going through a difficult time. She has lost important people in her life. She is lonely and sorrowing over her loss. I feel that the first verse may be describing her visiting her family members graves and how it is painful to loss someone you love.
    2) I feel that she loves each individual in this song. She uses words like “my mother and dear papa.” I feel that the word “dear” is a soft word that indicates affection and compassion for that person. She also shows that she cares for these people because she weeps tears for them.
    3) I believe she is referring to death as “you.” Because death took these people’s lives she cries, and leaves home.
    4) I feel that the narrator has gone through a lot of loss for ones that she has loved. It is very difficult losing a loved one and she states that she doesn’t want to go through that again. The pain takes a toll on her. It also has a long road to recovery as stated in this sentence “Now I been down that LONG plank walk…”
    5) I believe the violin adds to the sorrow feeling of the song. But the guitar is up beat and choppy. It kind of takes away from the vibe that the violin is giving.

  13. Adreienne is talking about a break up in her song. She is talking about how the break up came out of no where and hit her like a train. She is standing there looking down this long line waiting for someone to come back but all she finds is the lonesome of just her and no one else. She care for her family and wants to return to them but can't because she sis still hung up over waiting for this person to come back to her. The you is a little hard to exactly pin point who she is talking about. It could be about the person who left her, but on the other hand she may be talking about how the person she loved was killed and she is talking about the person who killed that person. She is in deep pain for the loss of her loved on and she can't move on because all she has is the deepest amount of love for them. That person stole her heart and now she is so in love she wants to wait for that person even if they don't come back to her. The music adds to the story she is telling by showing that she is in deep sadness for what has happened to her and she is showing that she is letting the emotions out but at the same time she is showing that she has the strongest love for this person.

  14. Adreienne is speaking on someone close who she has lost. Im guessing it is her boyfriend. What makes it even harder on her is that she really doesn't have anyone to go to at this hard time.

  15. 1: I believe Adrienne is singing about the gief of losing a son and thinking about him is causing all these feelings and emotions and that's why she crying she miss her brown eye boy. 2) She loves her mother father and brother. 3) I believe the you in the song is her grief she says you cause my to weep or you do cause me to moan I believe when she says is when she think of the brown eye boy she can't help but to cry. 4) she really loves this brown eye boy she caus a lot because of him which also means he means a lot to her to when it makes her sad that's that person no longer with her. 5: I believe the music adds it perfectly it fits to the sadness on her lyrics it soft and slow and her singing just ties it all together to make this a beautiful song for whoever she made it for.

  16. Adrienne in the song is going through a break up. She is in a lonely state "i walked on down that lonesome line". She is going through a hard time during this break up she refers to a "you" in the song to me I can see that this "you" person is her significant other. Me being kind of sinical I see a lot of anger and rage towards her no longer significant other. I think the tone of the music definitely adds to the song because it shows the anger and the sadness she is going through.

  17. I believe Adrienne is singing about her break up. she is having a difficult time through the breakup. the "you" is the other partner, or significant other. it is difficult to lose a loved one, and the author doesn't want it to happen again. the music adds to the song because it is soft and slow.

  18. Reading the lyrics and listening to the song it sounds like Adrienne life is filled with loss and death.she says how her mama and papa can be found on a country road and now her son. As if he went off and gotten himself killed and she had to leave her home to walk that lonely walk to get her Brown eyed boys body. She sounds all cried out with no more loved ones to lose. The music is a simple country song that adds sadness hurt and pain to the point she is trying to make. Aundra glover
